Etiquettes. Should we already know this?
We often have a misconception that everyone share the same social etiquette, but many of us grew up in different environment, culture and background may perceive etiquettes differently.
The following are some general etiquettes from my personal point of view.
CANCELLATIONS
Sometimes inevitable things happen, but the key is communication.
There are unfortunate times where we need to cancel a scheduled meeting due to unforeseeable circumstances such as a sudden death in the family or involved in a accident making it impossible to attend.
Whether the importance or how big or small the meeting is, the bottom line is to make best effort to show up on time or at very least to communication and let the party know. The worst offenders are no-shows and no-communications. (A.K.A. Flakes). These offenders will most likely have a negative and probably permanent label to any future career. This is a small world and often references are shared amongst the community.
EXCUSES
There are so many excuses that it's almost impossible for me to name everything. Some are valid and some are just lame excuses. Below are some examples.
Valid Reasons
- Death within immediate family (not distant friend of a friend)
- Injury, unable to physically move (not scrapes or bumps)
- Arrest by the police (hope it is just a minor thing)
Poor excuses
- I’ve slept in
- I forgot about the meeting
- Got home very late at night
- Too tired
- Car broke down (take a taxi or other means to get there)
- Just don’t feel like it
GENERAL POINTERS - Do's and Don'ts
There are many things that you should and should not do but it boils down to common sense. Unforunately I cannot write out everything but I have listed a few points that I belive is useful.
Do's
- Make sure you know the direction
- Arrive 15 minutes early
- CALL if you do not see the other person.
- Make sure your phone is working and reachable
- Arrange alternative transportation (Backup plan)
- Look at someone in the eye when talking (Norht American manner)
Don'ts
- Don't chew gum unless you are asked for that purpose
- Don't roll your eyes when bored or tired. Say it.
- Never run off without telling someone. (safety)
- NEVER play with other people's equipment without asking.
That's it. I hope this helps.
